Why an H2V Trade Association in Magallanes?

A little more than a year ago H2V Magallanes, the Association of Green Hydrogen Producers and its derivatives, was constituted in Punta Arenas, which currently brings together six projects. Five of them will be located in the continental zone, centered in the communes of San Gregorio, Laguna Blanca and Punta Arenas, and another located in Bahía Gente Grande, on the island of Tierra del Fuego, potentially adding up to 10 GW of projects in parallel construction between 2027 and 2032. But why are the projects integrated into a trade association (GA) of this type? What is the role of this GA and what differentiates it from others currently operating in the country?

The answer is logical. It was imperative to have, at an early stage, a local trade association that would bring together in Magallanes both the pioneering industrial projects and those yet to come. Both for the Regional Government of Magallanes and the different actors of our community, it was desirable and necessary to have a multi-sectoral articulation space, focused on encouraging industry, but also aimed at strengthening the economic and social growth of the region, promoting the formation of human capital and local technical training; the generation of synergies and harmonious development with other productive activities in the region, facilitating the energy transition and decarbonization, but through projects that generate shared value in social and environmental matters.

We are talking about an association that even though it does not have a 100% visible and operational industry, since March 2023 it has set as GA to represent the common interests of its associated projects to participate in the public-private discussion, contributing with permanent dialogue, technical rigor and long-term vision. To this end, we have intensified efforts and initiatives aimed at actively participating in territorial planning, the relationship with public and private actors, productive sectors, academia and the various stakeholders, for the value of being connected with the territory and our community. As part of its function, H2V Magallanes has integrated in its medium and long term agenda topics where it is possible to advance and achieve convergences, for example, in terms of shared infrastructure and capacity building.

Currently there are other associations both in the Metropolitan Region and in other regions that are also focused on promoting this new industry, as is the case of the National Hydrogen Association -H2 Chile-, an entity that develops a strong international deployment and seeks to position Chile as one of the leading countries in the production and export of Green Hydrogen and brings together among its members representatives of the private, public and academic sector with 40 professional partners and more than 100 leading companies with the capacity to cover with supply of goods and services to the entire value chain of Green Hydrogen. With them, we work closely and collaboratively to accelerate together the enablement of the industry locally, considering the urgency imposed by climate change and the urgent need for economic recovery in the region.

Along with seeking to be recognized in the national Renewable Hydrogen and energy ecosystem, we also collaborate with various agencies for promotion and/or international cooperation, to generate greater awareness of the benefits of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, in industrial, commercial and residential applications.

H2V Magallanes integrates those who will be a large part of the productive engines of this new development pole in the region. We are therefore a regional guild and limited to hydrogen projects and derivatives, but with great aspirations and a clear roadmap. In less than a year we have been part of the virtuous articulation for the development of public-private agreements, subscribing concrete commitments, integrated to a work plan and Strategic Table, and insisting from the south that this is possible if we coordinate in time, if we do it well, so as not to lose this window of opportunity!
